TE Connectivity Upgrades DAS for 2015 MLB All-Star Game

July 13, 2015

CDIU Interface Saves Costs, Eases Deployment, Enhances Fan Experience

/PRNewswire/ -- TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, today announced that its FlexWave digital distributed antenna systems (DAS) have been deployed to upgrade mobile coverage and capacity for the 2015 Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. TE's DAS equipment will deliver 2100 AWS frequencies throughout the 44,000-seat stadium in downtown Cincinnati, and will leverage the CPRI Digital Interface Unit (CDIU) to save roughly 50 percent on the cost of deployment for the new system compared to other DAS installations.

MINNEAPOLIS, July 13, 2015 "TE Connectivity is a leader in providing DAS solutions for major stadium venues and events such as the MLB All-Star Game at Target Field in 2014 and the NFL championship at Cardinal Stadium earlier this year," said Peter Wraight, vice president and general manager of TE Wireless. "Many stadiums don't have room for multi-operator wireless head-ends on-site, and the cost and practicality of expansion and access is challenging for venue owners. Our CDIU interface slashes the time and cost of deployment, and our flexible, modular DAS host units and remotes make it easy to extend services and capacity over time, providing great investment protection for our customers."

TE's FlexWave DAS solutions were originally selected for Great American Ball Park in 2011, when the system supported 15 sectors of 850 and 1900 UMTS and 700 LTE MIMO services at the stadium. Over the years, the growth of mobile video usage dictated a capacity upgrade, and service was also extended to coverage in the stadium parking areas.

To perform the upgrade, TE deployed new AWS interface cards with CDIU in its FlexWave host units to eliminate racks of RF and power attenuation equipment in the head-end, and added new modules to the remote antennas. Both FlexWave high-power and low-power remotes are driven through the same host unit. Thanks to the modularity and flexibility of the FlexWave DAS products, the system upgrade did not require new fiber between the head-end and the remote units. New antennas were added in parking areas to extend coverage, but these were connected with cascaded fiber from existing antennas, saving the cost of running fiber all the way to the head-end.
